SPORTS : Messi Sets Sight On Pele After Overtaking Ronaldo

With his hat-trick heroics in Wednesday’s pre-World Cup international friendly against Haiti, Lionel Messi took his tally to 64 goals for Argentina.

The feat sees him overtake Brazil’s Ronaldo Luis Nazario da Lima in international goals as the World Cup winner scored 63 during his glittering career.

Messi, therefore, is now the second top scorer in the history of South America, behind only Brazil great Pele who scored 77 in his extraordinary career.

With the World Cup in Russia around the corner and another international friendly against Israel, the Barcelona superstar may well cut that gap on the legendary Brazilian over the coming month.

And, at the age of 30, he still has time to score the goals which would see him become the top scorer for any South American national team.

La Pulga was once again the top scorer in all European club competitions last season, ending the campaign with 45, one more than Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

His 34 La Liga goals saw him take the Pichichi and a record fifth European golden shoe as Barca completed the La Liga and Copa del Rey double.

Messi’s argentina will be going up against Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria in Group D of the World Cup.
